First Grade News

First Grade News:

We have had a wonderful start to the new school year! Our first graders are enjoying lots of “Firsts” at Cooper School: The first time to have a desk, the first time to stay at school all day like the big kids, the first time to play on the big playground, the first time to eat lunch in the cafeteria, the first time to go to PE and to the Computer Lab, the first time to take spelling tests; and their ultimate favorite: the first time to have THREE recesses! First Grade is great!
In our classrooms, we are focusing on teaching the rules, procedures, and behavioral expectations so that every student will be successful this year. Please encourage your children to come prepared to work hard on their studies, to treat others with kindness and respect, and to always follow our Cooper Rules.
First grade is a critical year! We are building the foundations for reading, writing, and mathematics. This will be a year of phenomenal growth for our first grade students! We are beginning with focusing on mastering the short vowel sounds, learning the first grade sight words, and writing short stories using complete sentences. The children are working in small reading groups to read books that are at a “just right” level for them. We are excited to help our first graders to become fluent, independent readers and writers!
In mathematics, our students are learning to add and subtract numbers. We are encouraging the children to think critically to solve problems and to be able to communicate their mathematical thinking with others.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year! Please remember that parents are encouraged to come and help in the classrooms. The children love having the extra helping hands (and the teachers do, too!).
Thank you for helping us to get this new school year off to a great start!
